thorns

she tried to forget the thorns
that ripped into her flesh
leaving holes of discontentment
longing and pain
she could feel the spurts of blood
oozing from the wounds
each droplet of blood
flowed from lies
of the unfaithful
trying to remember the roses
red, white and yellow
once laid at her feet
the long flowing gown she wore
the words said
lying on silken sheets of red
feathered pillows

trying to cleanse herself
she filled the bathtub
with hot water
gardenia bubble bath
candles circled her tub
stepping in slowly
one long leg at a time
the hot water soon covered her legs,
her thighs, her waist, her breast
finally relaxed
she fell into a twilight sleep

she awoke with a start
hearing the whispers of the past
nagging at her
she could not forget
those who betrayed her
slowly she rose from the tub
she saw her reflection
in the full length mirror
there on her body
were the thorns
she would never be able
to remove
