HUNGER

peering through the window
starvation in their eyes
watching the wealthy sit and eat
swating away the flies
not worrying about the hungry
those that walk the street
those in the dumpster
looking for something to eat
their hearts are heavy
their children salivate
no food for their tummies
they have to just wait
not wanting to be homeless
not wanting to sleep in the rain
not wanting their little children
crying with hunger pangs
they are willing to work
to earn any money
just to feed their children
some milk and honey
but no one helps them
everyone worries about their own
here the homeless are left
out in the cold all alone
these are not people on drugs
or with needles in their arms
they just want a home
to keep their children from harm
where have kind hearts gone
what can we do
the next time you see the homeless
make believe they are you
perhaps then you will know
just a little of what they feel
put your hand in your pocket
then get down and kneel
pray for your brother
and pray for yourself too
as rich as you are today
remember it can happen to you
