reflections in the mirror

i see her reflection
each time i look in the mirror
eyes that turned from brown to hazel
breasts that are fuller and rounder
a few strands of white in my hair
a wistful look in my eyes
wondering about the future
regretting some of the past
yet basking in the wonderful years
her warnings whispered in my ears
oh…i never listened to her
she was way too strict
i..way too wild
exact opposites..at least that’s what i thought
she tried so hard to hold onto me
but realized i was not hers to hold onto
i was me…an individual
i was not like my sisters
i would never be like her
and here i am thinking her thoughts
missing her more and more each day
only to see her smile
hear her sing in Italian in her soprano voice
or dance when no music played
now i am here singing
dancing to no music
and smiling when i think of her
perhaps we were never exact opposites
perhaps i was the most like her
when i speak i hear her voice
when i cry i wipe away her tears
when i laugh i recall her laughter
i..the wild girl…with the strict mother
see her reflection in the mirror
when i look at myself

reflections in the mirror
