When I was a little girl
I wore a Tiara on my head
Thought I was a princess
But instead
I was a poet
In disguise
I hadn’t yet
Opened up my eyes

My Tiara came off
And my eyes started to see
All the beauty
The world offered me
I put aside my Tiara
Cut off my curls
And through my eyes
I saw a different world

It was filled
With all kinds of faces
Roses, Gardenias
And far-off places
With a pen in my hand
And a notebook at my side
I started to write
About the wind and the tide

In a smile
I sometimes saw a tear
And was too young
To understand why it was there
Happiness and sadness
Often combined
Lights went on
I was no longer blind

I started to see
Without a word spoken
A person in torment
A heart broken
Masks covering faces
In despair
But the eyes always told me
It was there

I look at a picture
And read between the lines
Shapes and colors
In my mind
The words fly off
And I start to write
I don’t even
Sleep at night
I’m fascinated by diversity
In art and poetry
And wonder if people
See what I see

But again there is that diversity
I see it different than perhaps you
Sometimes purple
To me looks blue
I look at a forest
And see Angels dance
While Cherubs
Giggle and happily prance
They are not in the picture
Only in my mind
But I picture them there
All the time

I will look at an Ocean
And see a dolphin in pain
See sparkle falling
In the rain
See petals opening
Although they are closed
And if I close my eyes
Can smell a rose

I Miss My Tiara
I must admit
I was always happy
When I wore it
Being a poet brings beauty
But it also brings pain
My heart is different
It’s not the same
I feel the lows
As well as the highs
I often laugh
And I often cry
