Bapu (Gandhi)

Equality and justice
That was his belief
To give people freedom
Ending their grief

India was changed
Because of one man
There was no violence
That was his plan

His doctrine was simple
To end poverty
Wanted all people
To live in harmony

Gandhi was a man of non-violence
But he did not rest
Fasted for self-purification
And social protest

Resistant to tyranny
Civil disobedience he believed
Would help his people
From government greed

He was a vegetarian
Animals should not be killed
For use in food or clothes
Or for the thrill

On a sad day
January 30, 1948
His life was taken
Fanatics didn’t wait

They didn’t understand
Didn’t want partition
I often wonder
Was there any contrition

They may have taken his life
They did not kill his ideals
Gandhi was a man
At whose feet they should have kneeled

Didn’t they realize
His thoughts were for all
A man who fulfilled
A heavenly call

Bapu* he was called
So lovingly
A man of honor
That was Gandhi
