HER BEST FRIEND

IT WAS DARK AND DREARY
NO ONE WAS THERE
IN THE SILENCE
SHE MUMBLED A PRAYER

HE HAD LEFT
THERE WAS NO WORD
A VOICE SHE LOVED
NO LONGER HEARD

SHE PRAYED FOR HIM
WHEREVER HE STRAYED
SHE KNEW IT WAS NOT HIS FAULT
HE WAS THIS WAY

ILLNESS HAD DRIVEN HIM
FROM HER SIDE
HE WAS ASHAMED
AND WANTED TO HIDE

A STRAPPING MAN
FULL OF ZEST
COULD KEEP UP
WITH ALL THE REST

IN WHAT SEEMED LIKE A MOMENT
HE BECAME A SHELL
LIVING IN HIS OWN
PRIVATE HELL

HE WOULD LEAVE
AND NEVER CALL
THE WOMAN HE LOVED
MOST OF ALL

HIS PAIN SEVERE
HE DID NOT WANT HER TO SEE
WANTING TO LET HER GO
TO SET HER FREE

SHE KNEW IN HER HEART
HE WAS APPROACHING THE END
SHE WOULD LOSE
HER BEST FRIEND

SHE WOULD WAIT
AS SHE HAD DONE SO MANY TIMES BEFORE
SHE KNEW SOON
HE WOULD OPEN THE DOOR

INTO HIS ARMS
SHE WOULD RUN
LOOKING IN HER EYES
WAS HIS ONLY SUN

SOMETIMES HE DIDN’T KNOW
WHO SHE WAS
HIS LIFE SEEMED EMPTY
IT WAS A BLUR

SHE WAS THE ONLY ONE
WHO COULD BE HIM TO REALITY
AND ONCE AGAIN
SET HIS SOUL FREE

HIS MIND WAS EMPTY
NOT THE SAME
IT WAS HARD FOR HIM
TO REMEMBER HIS NAME

SHE WOULD REMIND HIM
OF TIMES PAST
HOPING THE MEMORIES
WOULD LAST

HE WOULD BE LUCID
FOR A WHILE
EVEN CRY
EVEN SMILE

THEN IT WOULD BE GONE
NO MEMORY
OF WHO HE WAS
OR WHO HE COULD BE

SHE STOOD FAITHFUL
TO THE END
WHEN SHE LOST
HER BEST FRIEND

HER BEST FRIEND
