DECEMBER YEARS

Now she is in her December Years
Old age has brought on many fears
Her husband walks with a cane
They can’t go out when it rains
Fear of cars zooming by
Fear of illness and inevitably they will die
No regrets about a life well lived
But there is so much more to give
She remembers when they would dance
Behind the boardwalk they would romance
Life seemed to be a musical breeze
Laughing and she was a constant tease
Children walking under foot
Chimneys cleaned out of soot
Smiling faces in a crowd
How he would always sing out loud
Now medicine and vitamins prevail
Their love once a happy tale
She wishes for just a few more
Wishing they could walk back in the door
But that door is closing soon
And it will be the end of their tune
One of happiness and smiles
Walking the woods for many miles
Lunch in a little cafe
Stopping at a motel along the way
She looks in his lined face
Wishing that she could trace
All the lines and years and erase
The years that passed at such a fast pace
And once again be young and gay
But it will never be that way
Now they are in their December Years
Filled with so many fears
