HANDS THAT HAVE LABOURED

HANDS THAT HAVE LABOURED
Hands that have toiled
Hands that are tired
Hands that are soiled

Working hard
Until so tired
Hands sore
Not admired

Earning a living
Paying the rent
Life of care
Money always spent

Lines of life
Lines so deep
Memories of hard work
In his sleep

Scars on palms
Scars on fingers
Scars on heart
Scars that linger

Never having time
To live his life
Wants to spend
With children and wife

Always going
To work long hours
Life sometimes
Is so sour

He’ll go on working
Just like this
It will be worth it
With his children’s kiss

Sometimes sad
Sometimes weak
He must do his job
For money he seeks

He takes care of his family
Looks in their faces
And will smile
For all his graces

He knows life is difficult
But he won’t stop
He’ll work hard
Until he drops

To put food on the table
And see his children smile
And to hold his wife
And sit with her for awhile

Although he is tired
And wants to sleep
He sits with his family
Because of his love so deep
