I Can't Work For That Corporation

When I was seventeen, I received a telephone call from a U.S. Army recruiting office. The man on the other end of the phone was doing his job. He was inquiring about my future plans. The phone call went a little something like this:

U.S. Army: “Hello, may I please speak with Mr. Dwayne Boyd?”

Me: “This is Dwayne.”

U.S. Army: "How are ya today?”

Me: “I’m fine”

U.S. Army: “I’m calling today because our records indicate that you’re about to graduate high school. Is that accurate?”

Me: “Yes”

U.S. Army: “Have you thought about a possible career in the U.S. Army?”

Me: “To be honest, I think about the military every day.”

U.S. Army: “Really, that’s great! I called to invite you to a get together we’re having, this Saturday… C’mon down for some barbeque and some field games.”

Me: “That sounds like fun.”

U.S. Army: “Yes, it will be. You mentioned that you think about the military quite a
bit. Why is that?”

Me: “Well, my father was in the Army. He retired.”

U.S. Army: “Great, great, so, you might say that he had a good job then?”

Me: “Sure, I guess. He kept a roof over our heads and food on the table.”

U.S. Army: “So, can I count on you for Saturday? I’ll put you on the guest list.”

Me: “It sounds like a lot of fun, but I have to tell you that I’m afraid I may not pass the
required physical exam.”

U.S. Army: “Mr. Boyd, what do you mean?”

Me: “I don’t think I can come and work for you. I have Cerebral Palsy. I walk with
crutches and leg braces.”

U.S. Army: “Oh…”

A long pause followed. To break the silence, I simply asked: “So, does this mean I can’t come to the barbeque on Saturday?” After that, all I heard was the droning of the dial tone as the line went dead.

Artist's Description

Twenty years have passed and I still laugh about this one.
I mean no disrespect to those who serve in the armed forces.
I am thankful for those who have sacrificed, so that I remain free.
