A Traitorous Stage

I step out onto the stage,
Preparing myself for a show to end all.
The fog rolls in,
The spotlight centers on me alone.
I close my eyes,
And feel the majesty of the theater in the air.
Though my face sustains its dramamtic pose,
Inside, my heart rejoices.
What perfection can be found in a place such as this,
Where lives play out between the curtain and the pit.
With a deep, unnoticed breath, I take my place.
Reciting lines as if they were my own verse.
I know who I am here.
I am strong and confident.
I am joyful or sad as the script calls for it.
Then, before I am ready,
The show is through.
The lights fade out, and when they return
I see no grand audience staring up at me.
But at a talentless fool playing my role.
I am only background noise.
