On preparing to be converted to Kindles

O virgin paper! Gleaming card! Soft leather! Let me open thee, ravish thee, be cut on thy corners as the tips of my fingers flick, flick, flick to my favourite page, remembered from an older tome, now mine forever.

Sit on my shelf, Book, secure in my love, nestled betwixt Saki and Marquez; take your chances with Rumi and Austen as the books jumble in the pattern of some higher plan. I will open you, careful of the spine at first, until, engaged, obsessed, I force you apart, cracking the title, scarring you forever with the depth of my need – my book now. I could write my name on your flyleaf for the sheer pleasure of the pen running over the fibrous page, cushioned on the might of well-chosen words.

And you, shitty little plastic thing, electronics, screen and static, sit over there in that corner. It is not your time yet.

Artist's Description

I find there is an ever-increasing chance that one day I will be unfaithful but not disloyal to my beloved books.
