Artist's Description

This pencil portrait illustration was done on smooth 9X12 acid-free Bristol board with #2 pencil and kneaded eraser. Taken from a color photograph, it consumed 7 hours of invested time, from start to finish. One of my favorite illustrations, stemming from bias: Mikey is my godson. He was a toddler at the time, curious and inquisitive as to senses: sounds, sights, smells, actions…just imagine those synapses at the time of this picture-taking!

The gradations and highlighting were completed with the aide of a kneaded eraser, effecting the softness in his “onesy”, hair, eyes and ultra-soft new skin.
The eyes were important to render acutely, a reflection (pundit) of his curiosity and docile charm. Big round brown eyes draw (pundit) you in…and compel one to wonder the child’s mindset and growth.

The artist specializes in pencil portraits and utilizes an array of techniques conducted via a span of materials, some art-oriented, others simple household items, so as to render the effects necessary.
