Before the Funeral Begins

I’ve seen some of these faces before. At a swim meet here, a scouting event there or perhaps at the last school play.

The daughter is somber until she sees someone that she truly loves. Then she’s all light and bubbliness. With so much life left she struggles with the suddenness of it all.

It’s a mass of humanity all sizes, styles and personalities. They seem bound together more by the light that’s gone out than the lights that still burn bright around them.

Even here I struggle to remain present, to gain an ever glimpse to be still, still. My mind wanders over centuries and each face. I can’t dam the torrent of thoughts.

Faces of sadness, laughter, tears, hope, fury not just here and now but in all the evertimes. How many one less lights now?

Soon we’ll see each other again at a school play or a scouting event or a swim meet. How are you? Great will come the reply and you? Never been better.

Stream of consciousness as people were arriving for a funeral. Suddenly I was contemplating all the dead and all the living.
