A Damned Trickster

My cousins were polite southern boys
with a twisted glint in their eyes
walking down the road they’d get you into a fight
by yelling the N word at a passing car.
I doubt their mother called it charming
but they still seemed to make her smile
that’s the life of a damned trickster darlin
he’s got two stories in his head all the time.

He’s the kid who got the cod fish oil for lying
he’s the kid with a threshold for pain.
Dad takes him out behind the shed
and teaches him a lesson by giving him a beer
or makes him smoke an entire pack of menthols
until he throws up in the grass
but the damned trickster just goes back
to smoking as if nothing ever happened.

Because it’s his world
he’s a politician
the halls of power are filled
by coyotes ravens and Brer Rabbits
who give you that smile and say
I lost some money
pleeease forgive me
I’ll change
and I’ll change and I’ll change.

From his feathered cap to mercury
even the very elements slip through your fingers
they say god has a sense of humor
god winks at his special children.
They could be good for nothing six time married sponges
but a thousand people show up at their funerals
such is life and death for a damned trickster
everyone loves a good story or two.
