38. Worst injury you’ve ever had?
Do I have to pick just one? Okay, so I was 14, playing football, and had to go in the bull pen because I jumped offsides during practice. That’s where the whole team makes a circle and you’re in the middle; the coach calls out a team mate who has to try and knock you down; you have to keep your feet and the ball. We went around once and no one knocked me down so the coaches had me stay in for another round (assholes). Coach Gomez went up to the new recruit (illegally obtained from a senior high school) and told him to put me on my ass. He was at least 100 lbs bigger than me, but I was so mad I wasn’t going to back down. He charged and when he got close I launched into him with everything I had. That’s the last thing I remember. I woke up some time later, probably within a few minutes of the impact, and all I could see was a blinding white light; all I could feel was pain. Coach Crowley walked over and told me to “rub some dirt on it.” They rushed Robby to the hospital with a broken collarbone and left me lying there! I did get help from the assistant pastor (yes, this was a private christian school, though the coaches were hired from the Air Force Base) who managed to get me to the locker room. It took about an hour to get my pads off ‘cause every movement was agony. I was in bed for a couple days and hobbled for a couple weeks and took weekly visits to the Chiropractor for a year before most of the problem was resolved. I did rejoin the team when the pain was managable, ’cause my dad said I couldn’t be a quitter. I went on with my life, but there have been very few days where I don’t have some sort of pain – probably because that wasn’t the only injury I’ve had…
