Artist's Description

Walking down Mt Morosi after a day’s survey and mapping, 1983. Mt Morosi is a steep sided mesa with two good springs that was turned into a fortress by the local Sotho tribesmen (under Chief Morosi). After his son escaped after being caught on a cattle raid in the mid 19th century, Morosi’s men held off the British Army (well, a couple of regiments & artillery) for months before they were eventually overun – by which time the son was long gone! You can still find fragments of shells around the slopes and flattened Martini-Henry cartridges next to the rocks where soldiers crouched to fire up at the defiant Sotho. An unforgettable piece of archaeology, in an equally memorable setting.
