Do Not Judge A Book By It's Cover

At 10:45 AM,
Precisely the number two, route four,
Inner city bus stops,
Raven haired,
Not much to look at,
If you liked to look at much,
But more than the eyes could handle,
If character was your objective,
She takes a seat at the front,
Looking at her bright red shoes,
She glances around,
Bright navy blue blazer,
Dress jacket,
Anchor insignia,
Emblazoned on the breast pocket,
Gold buttons,
Blue Nosed approved,
Buttoned on the left side,
Bright red blouse,
Fingerless lace gloves,
She is from a different era,
I am entranced,
Smiling she sits polishing the buttons,
With a pale blue handkerchief
Her hands gesturing to nobody,
Talking to ghost,
Book by her side,
Kids laugh and point,
Adults talk,
Not under their breath,
She smiles,
The voices quietly echo,
Idiot, imbecile,simpleton,
She pretends not to hear,
Picking up the book by her side,
She tries to hide,
I see hurt and sadness in her eyes,
I wonder why so cruel,
Fighting against smiles aimed at humanity,
She exits at Little Italy,
Enters Spinalleies,
The aromas are mesmerizing even as I stand outside,
The smells of fresh baked breads, sweet cakes, spicy meats,
Awaken my senses,
I can taste the cold winter breeze,
So happy to be alive,
I see her leaving,
Brown paper bag held tightly in laced gloved hand,
Do they know?
She goes to Caboto Park,
Sits and eats,
Fresh olives, brochette and Panini,
Feeding and talking to the birds,
I know,
I’m happy I know,
I’m ecstatic I know,
She sees me,
I tip my hat,
Bowing politely,
She smiles,
Gesturing with her hand,
In acknowledgement,
“A Book of Luminous Things”
Sits beside her,
A bus passes,
She smiles and waves,
Doing a silly dance,
They point,
I think to myself,
Do they even know?
Who Czeslaw Milosz is,
I laugh at the top of my lungs,
Gesturing to nobody,
Talking to ghost,
I walk away,
A much happier and wiser man,
Than I was an hour ago?
Why did I trade my gloves.
