I got a little sunburnt yesterday
it felt good
my skin glowed
my heart smiled
memories of childhood rushed back
blue icypoles and lazy days
It happened at the park
while watching my children play
No, I didn’t cover myself in chemical ridden cream
to ward off the suns natural rays
I timed it so
it didn’t peel
but I got a glow that felt like
mother earth had touched me
My friends were shocked
unheard of, what?
You haven’t heard the news?

I miss the days
when surfboards were styrofoam
and kids played in groups
on streets and on bikes
when milk came in bottles
baking at the door
and when the smell of a cigarette
lured us towards our grandpas
when naughty boys were just naughty
and when uncle ted died of life itself
when chocolate was chocolate
and fat kids were just fat kids
We’ve come so far
don’t get me wrong
the doctors do help some
but since when does one rule apply to all
and how did we forget
that its our spirit that keeps us going?
I say enjoy your lives
you will not necessarily die
of chocolate, smokes, or sunburn
we do not all have rare diseases
and you’re just angry when you lose it
There is no need for fancy names
or labelling or coddling
The one thing that will kill you
is fear itself,
it crushes life
and points the bone
Just enjoy your lives
be real, be free
and when your time is up,
its up.
