The Leaves Whisper Revenge

The leaves whispered revenge but winter was coming and they would soon be dead, hope lost with the coming of a lasting frost. Rustling in the cool air they raged but nothing could stop time from passing as it always did, as it always had, as it always would. It happened every time. The cold won every time. No matter how hard they tried, the leaves who whispered revenge always fell to the ground, rotting away for an age. It is only natural.
“Who’s there?” a voice, low and deep and eerie asked.
The echo bounced off the trees. That was all. He strained his ears. He strained his eyes until he could see a blazing yellow spot hovering in the darkness in front of him. The trees stood as tall silhouettes around him. He thrust a sweaty hand into the dismal blackness hoping to feel the steady vibrations of another breathing nearby. Nothing. Not even the breeze moved. Nothing.
Walking again, he heard the leaves screaming underfoot. Their tortured souls disturbed by his presence. They annoyed him. The noise annoyed him. Nothing moved for miles around him, nothing made a sound. Nothing but his boots on the ice-guilt leaves below. It was terrible. But just as it seemed nothing could worsen the situation, it began.
Slowly it began, hardly detectable but for the sudden drop in pressure. The clouds calmly fell to the ground. He could see them coming for him. They drifted at him, attacking him. Stinging, needling, vicious, they bombarded him, clinging to his hair and eyebrows. They melted on his grey cheeks. He stopped for a moment. The lack of noise had worsened. Now the air was tighter, closer than before. It pressed on his skin. It was colder, more oppressing. And still his hands were slimy with sweat. His fever clouded his mind until all he could think about was the burning snow on his hot face. He had to continue though. He needed to rest. Crunch, crunch, snap. His tired feet drudged onward through the darkness. When would it end? Would it ever end?
