The Wild Artichoke is a common spiny plant found all over Malta. Perennial, and stout, it grows up to one metre in height. Its leaves are thick and toothed, and edged with yellow spines. The flower heads are violet-purple and attract all types of insects especially wasps and bees. When dry it sometimes resembles a stubby shaving brush.
