Artist's Description

Giuseppe was only fourty five when his wife died. Maria devoted most of her life to him. They had no children and he was an only child. Maria on the other hand was considered to be an orphan. She never knew her parents.
Ever since his accident at work, at the age of twenty five, when he fell from a scaffolding while painting a ship’s side at the Admiralty Dockyard, and broke his spine, Maria had to go out and work herself. The meagre disability benefits he received monthly from the Admiralty, (because they said it was his fault), were not enough to support both of them. However the few extra pennies she made were considered by her to be a blessing from God. She knew no rest. Working each day of the week doing house chores for three different families from sunup till sundown. Working in the Summer heat and Winter cold while all the time thinking of her paralised husband at home all alone and praying to God to keep him safe till she gets back to him. She never forgot the day he took her out of the orphanage and married her. She was sixteen then and he twenty with a good stable job.
When they got to the stage where they couldn’t afford the rent of the small house they hoped to be their home, they found these two small rooms whose rent was much lower. At least they could now afford some meat or a fish once a month.
For twenty whole years she never complained but continued to work practically day and night not caring about her own needs or state of health until one day she collapsed from fatigue. The bad diet finally got her. She hardly ate anything, saving the food for her husband telling him that she already ate at her place of work.
They brought her home and put her on the bed beside her husband. During the night she lost consciousness again, and slipped off the bed. Her husband shouted for help all through the night till someome heard him in the early hours of the morning. When they entered they found her on the floor as cold as ice. The authorities burried her the same day. He could not go to the funeral and was left all alone. When someone from the parish went to see him after the burial, there was no answer to his call. Entering the second room which served as a bedroom the man thought at first that Giuseppe was asleep, but soon realised that he was not breathing. He died of a broken heart to join his wife in the otherlife. This is the house they shared . Its been empty since 1938.
