Artist's Description

Another dying trade. After drying the selected canes (similar to bamboo) he has cut from the Valley, this Man parts the canes in half, lenghthwise, with a special paring knife. Then he cuts the cane into 3 to 4mm strips. After making the bottom, which also serves as the door, he proceeds to build the round body which tapers at the top. The special entry hole he leaves for the last. When finished, the trap is loaded with pieces of fish, to entice the prey to enter the trap, and is then lowered into the sea. Its location is marked with a buoy. It is normally picked up again after a few hours. Sometimes it is left for a day or so. The one in the picture is for Grouper and Morray Eels. It is similar in principle to Crab and Lobster traps but made from Cane and is round in shape.
