Dedicated to Australia’s first Saint, Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop and Father Julian Tenison Woods who started a school and founded the Sisters of St Joseph at Penola, South Australia in the 1860s.

Mary MacKillop and Father Woods were deeply committed to the education of all children, regardless of wealth and social standing.

Father Woods was also a renowned geologist and fitted in scientific expeditions and lectures with his pastoral work.

20km North of Penola on the Riddoch Highway, Father Woods Park contains a number of chainsaw-carved wood sculptures created in 2010 as a memorial to Father Julian Tenison Woods by artist Kevin Gilders. This one highlights his geological interest.

Penola is in the beautiful Coonawarra wine growing region of South Australia.

Taken with Pentax k-r on 18 October 2011 at Penola, South Australia.
