Hyangwonji is a square pond in the rear garden of the concubines’ quarters of Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul, South Korea.
The pond is overlooked by Geoncheonggung, a residence created by King Gojong in 1873 for himself and Queen Myeongseong. Tragedy struck here in October 1895 when Japanese assassins broke in and stabbed the Queen to death.
Dismantled in 1909 during the Japanese occupation, this part of the palace was restored to its original state between 1990 and 2007.
This shot was taken with my Pentax k-r on 29 October 2012.
