Koinoboro, Carp shaped windsocks, flying from the mast of the “Yaizu Hachora”, a replica of a 400 year old fishing boat, brought all the way from Japan for the Wooden Boat Festival in Hobart in February 2011.

Oringinating in ancient times Koinoboro are now traditionally flown in Japan to celebrate Tango no Sekku (端午の節句), a National holiday; Children’s Day.

Children’s Day takes place on May 5. Landscapes across Japan are decorated with koinobori from April to early May, in honor of sons and in the hope that they will grow up healthy and strong.
