"No Fire"

‘No Fire’

At controls he sits, but train he does not drive
The boiler is but empty, fire not alive
Throttle has been cut, and the brakes applied
Yet, this train moves on, in spite of efforts tried

The locomotive travels, not at breakneck speed
Passing by the signals, of them it does not heed
Reluctant to be passenger, sun is getting low
Cab seat is just a pretense, darkness starts to grow

No headlight there is shining, firebox is cold
No number seen on engine, no response to what’s told
Slowly, surely, sinking; with black smoke leaking oil
This locomotive should’ve stopped; it certainly doesn’t toil!

Panic sets, silently, to person in cab seat
Where is this train going: to whom and what to meet?
Perhaps the weight of baggage, stowed in many car
Is too much for the engine, and grade too steep by far?

Throttle has been cut! Brakes applied, but yes!
Oh! To stop this bloody train and get out of this mess!
Darkness seeps, through nightfall, and thick black oily smoke
This bloody train! To stop it such, truly is no joke!

The subtle panic, as it moves on down the line
Controlling not, black monstor, once desired fine
To end this journey, to stop this train in time
Well, in sooth; I’d board another, and think that it was fine.
