"The Last Run"

‘The Last Run’

The locomotive greasy, and showing lack of care
The paint once shined and nurtured, now does show its wear
Meticulous attention, once received in prime
Has given way to newer, models more with time

Proudly She approaches, the ol’ water spout
Her headlight shining brightly, number displayed about
Her tender is replenished with care; the water, coal
Her last trip She knows it not, ‘tis the owner’s goal

The engineman most careful, to oil each joint with care
The fireman cleans the headlight, most fond of this ol’ mare
Conductor makes appearance, looks upon the grime
A tear forms there upon his eye, remembering other time

Good bye old friend crew whispers, with exchange of knowing glance
Her days have been most numbered, to be still here but chance
Having tended to their good friend, the train crew move toward
Conductor calls that all familiar, ‘All Aboard!’

With headlight shining brightly, and number all aglow
Her caretaker notches throttle, and train begins to go
Teardrops fill his eyes, and fall upon Her floor
The fireman most carefull, to place coal into Her door

With strength and pride and power, She moves along the track
She has no idea, She won’t be coming back
At final destination, the scrapper’s torch doth wait
To destroy and rip apart Her heart, is but the final fate.
