On 25 May 1942, AD233 was shot down by German Focke Wulf Fw 190s over Gravelines (France), while being flown by Squadron Leader Jankiewicz. This particular Spitfire was part of the Spitfire Fund raising from the Dutch East Indies. On the left side it carried the presentation name "West Borneo I"
