Sandals of the Nazarene Chapter X

I stood there for minutes – I could not fault her reaction to her newfound awareness.
Was not I greatly perturbed at my own participation in the same very events – to realize a great miscarriage of justice had been carried out? Even now I make a mental effort not to think on that day or rather days-weeks after. My own life was in trauma – no identity worth a temple pigeon’s dung. It had only been recently that I felt my life again had purpose and meaning. Was my past association in such a horrid event returned to haunt and menace me again? All because I could not part with the very token that tied me in with such events? It had haunted me yet I had kept it – held onto it only because I felt responsible
not to dispose of them wrecklessly –careless of their disposition. Now, in the blink of an eye, fate(?) had seen to another resolution. Was this His way of disposing me of the responsibility of keeping them in my possession. In a way I sure hoped so. Athena saw them as an answer to a beggar’s need of foot attire and quite rightly too. I felt free of just another piece of burden that had haunted me with its rightful disposition. I laughed – a carefree laughter. Jesus would want it to come out this way. No need to hold them as some divine icons to ‘worship’. Did not Rome still have a shrine for the bloodied tunic of Julius Caesar? By now it must have fallen to ruin and decay. So would the sandals in time. Best that the beggar make use of the gift from his Angel of Mercy. Where was she?

As if from heaven an angel was sent, one of Cornelius’ servants came to the inner court where I stood.

“Sire, I come to inform you that Athena is well and will return with you tomorrow after the worship and breaking of bread. My master speaks that he will speak with her this evening and rest her mind on matters that were. He bids you Peace and Godspeed.”

“Thank You. Are you the one that your master sought Jesus’ aid to heal?”

“ Yes, Sire. Were it not for the Nazarene
I would have died in my sins for I was quite taken with sickness. Did you not have His sandals ?”

“Yes, I was the steward of them until the Master found a worthy sole to shod.”

“Yes, may he walk with trueness in his path.”

“Amen. Tell your master and my wife I look to see them on morrow’s morn.”
With naught other matters to hold my attentions and focus I left my house and strod down to the courtyard and to the sea.

As I neared the courtyard, I saw the man that Athena had given the sandals of the Nazarene and strode quietly by him. Into his jar, I placed a denari, a local coin that the man may address his other sundry needs.

The man’s eyes widened with graciousness.

“Thank you, Sir. I am overwhelmed’

“See to I you use it well to purchase food and new clothing and then report to my estate for hire.

“I wasn’t always in this great need, Sir. The High Council ran many out of Jerusalem because we were of the Way. We left with nothing but what was on our backs. My own sandals broke up on the journey to here. If it were not for an angel of Mercy, I would not be shod so well. She told me to walk true with the Master as if I walked in His very steps”.

“Truly, we all must indeed.”I rejoined. “Godspeed”.

I walked away at peace within. Athena was indeed an angel of mercy –my angel wife.

I knew that her fears would be assuaged as well as my own. He still walks among us in each and every child that has been called out to newness of life. Aught we not always be careful how we are shod? Well did the Baptizer say….’Prepare the way of the Lord.’
