Once upon a deacon….

There once was a deacon
Who thought he was a beacon -
Upstandin’ member of the community,
-well enuf as it should be;
Served his country,
That is well in itself;
Taxes paid on his fine land and property,
Had a family, raised them ‘proper’;
Had a garden, a diesel tractor;
Gave the noontime prayer of blessing,
Even read out loud, his Sunday School lesson,
Daily gave his wife his wondrous critique
All the marvelous things he knew and experienced;
“Match that with the knowledge you have
of the quadratic formula”
And the chemical composites of fertilizer;
Told you who married who way back in ’44 -
Fourth and fifth cousin removed of big Clay Moore!
Put folkses in their places – what a marvelous thing
Amazing Grace – he did loudly sing;
His ‘standard’ was self measured,
Self justified in the things he did and said,
Someone else must have wronged – not he!
Pillar of the community always to be.

Once upon a deacon….
