Artist's Description

The Whale Jaw Bone arch on the West Cliff, Whitby, North Yorkshire, England, is a replacement for the original arch which was erected some time after 1853 and is now displayed in the Whitby Archives & Heritage Centre. The bones for the current arch were donated by Alaska in April 2003.

St Mary’s Church and Whitby Abbey are on the other side of the River Esk on the eastern headland and are visible through the whale arch.
