The view from the top of the ancient walls surrounding the old fortified city of Mdina on the beautiful Mediterranean Island of Malta.
Mdina is one of Europe’s finest examples of an ancient walled city and unusual in its mix of medieval and Baroque architecture.
Today Mdina has a quiet, restrained atmosphere in keeping with its noble past. Lamp lit by night, Mdina transforms itself into the ‘Silent City’.
Malta is a small island situated south of Sicily in the Mediterranean Sea. Malta covers just over 300 km² in land area, making it one of Europe’s smallest and most densely populated countries (population 413,627 on 1st Jan 09). Malta is ranked at number 7 in the list of most densly populated places in the world (the UK is number 51). This means that when looking from the battlements, the thing that strikes you most is the number of towns, villages and buildings you can see in all directions.
