Artist's Description

On the Greek Island of Halki (Chalki), there are many ruined houses like this one. The Islands population has declined from 4000 to just about 300 over the course of the last 50 years or so. What remains of the population has mostly moved to Nimborio, the only remaining village on the Island. Many stones from the abandoned houses have been used to build the houses of Nimborio.

Tourism is thriving in Halki and many of the abandoned houses are being rebuilt to aid the tourist boom.

Halki is a small charming island, part of the Dodecanese group of Greek islands, situated opposite the west coast of the Island of Rhodes.
