Artist's Description

Historic Scotland Category A Listed Buildings

Culross Mercat (Market) Cross in the beautifully restored historic Burgh town of Culross (pronounced “Coo-ros”, (Gaelic: Cuileann Ros)), Fife, Scotland.

A market cross was a common feature in a Burgh and was the symbol of a Burgh’s right to trade and was normally located in a town’s market place.

Culross Mercat Cross, which has a Unicorn on top, is sited in a prominent central position in the town, a cobbled area which lies at the junction of four roads and beside Back Causeway which follows the line of the original street which ran from the Abbey to the Sandhaven (where the Town Square is located).

This cross, sited on the original 16th Century base, replaced a plain stone megalith with a small surmounting cross. The restoration of the cross was done in 1902 to commemorate the coronation of Edward VII.

Culross Mercat Cross is an Historic Scotland Category A Listed structure (Ref: LB24000).

Culross Mercat Cross is also a Scheduled Ancient Monument – Ref: SM4288.

Behind the Cross is The Study (built 1633), where Bishop Leighton of Dunblane conducted theology lessons and reputedly composed his sermons during his occasional visits to Culross. The Study is an example of 17th century Scottish architecture which has an impressive gabled roof and lookout tower. A Norwegian painted ceiling and original panelling decorate the interior.

Lying just off the evocative and probably once descriptive Stinking Wynd, Leighton’s study room was high above the rancid smells in the Outlook Tower from where he would get great views over the Forth.

Bishop Leighton’s Study is an Historic Scotland Category A Listed Building (Ref: LB24045).
