Artist's Description

The caterpillar is one of several quirky wooden carvings adorning the railings at the Queen’s View overlooking Loch Tummel in Highland Perthshire, Scotland.

One of the outstanding beauty spots in all of Scotland and, on clear days, a panorama of loch and mountain scenery stretches westwards as far as the Glencoe hills.

There is just a little doubt about which Queen is meant. Queen Victoria certainly visited it in 1866, when travelling privately, “incognita” as she so correctly puts it. However, it is more widely believed to have been named after Queen Isabella the 14th century wife of Robert the Bruce.
