Magpie vendetta

don’t get me wrong – i LOVE magpies, love their song and i’ve had some nice friendly ones that used to walk thru the house stopping in my kitchen and waiting for me to feed them bread BUT there’s ONE magpie i don’t like and he remembers me each year about at this time.

I buy bread in the mornings on my way home from my bike ride -i cruise into the wharf and buy a sourdough baguette, put it down my jersey and cycle home (it’s like hot bread out of the oven by the time i walk up to the kitchen and give it to my kids). The other morning i’m riding along this street and WHACK!, this black and white thing is hurtling thru the air screeching and attacking me viciously…i cycle faster in a panic and it’s still smashing into me -the top part of the baguette is ripped assunder and there’s no where to hide or shelter -i just have to sprint away from there -uphill! argh.

Then after a morning of 10 hill repeats i forgot the attack on this street and i didn’t have bread down my back and was climbing slowly up the hill to get home when WHAM -something collides with the side of my head -you turn to look out of habit and i nearly have my eye ripped from it’s socket -the claws have scratched my face.

Thank god for my helmet and sunnies (always wear protection) or i would have lost an eye, i’m sure. Now, i’m hating that bloody magpie and have to remember not to ride home that way -it is the official cycle route -and maybe it’s hanging there waiting for bike riders to attack for fun. Would it be the same bird that attacked me last year?
Bastard Bird. I feel like taking up shooting -this could be the Australian version of Roadrunner, some insane woman plotting ways of stalking and killing a magpie.
