Artist's Description

In the 1800’s, these cells were used to house the worst class of convicts from Port Arthur who were sent to Saltwater River to work underground in the coal mines in dreadful conditions which became known as ‘hell on Earth’. The sandstone ceiling/floor above the cells has collapsed enabling a view down into cells below.
