Artist's Description

Taken at Melbourne Zoo
Black and white Colobus Monkeys are found across equatorial Africa.
The name “Colobus” is derived from the Greek word meaning “docked” or “mutilated.” Colobus monkeys were once considered to be abnormal because they have only a small stub where the thumb would be. This is an adaptation and not a mutilation, it allows Colobus monkeys to travel along the tops of branches more effectively. They are considered an endangered species in Kenya, being vulnerable to habitat destruction and human overpopulation.
