Road Trip Home

It was a sobering drive. Zoned out just once, but safely home now.
Feeling contented, I drift into the kitchen on a pillow of light.
Alex slinks gracefully towards me, her large eyes staring intensely.
“Nice having you where you belong”, she whispers.
I raise an eyebrow and pirouette to the fridge for another beer.
“And where do I belong, my cherub?”
The fridge door is locked. Alex starts singing like a child.
“You belong with me and only me. Roads scare me, you see, you see.”
I laugh. “Ever since that car ran you over, correct?”
The palm of my giant hand slaps the fridge door, and the latch breaks.
Thousands of beer cans sway in rhythm on endless rainbows.
“Oh my!” I muse. “Am I in heaven?”
Alex purrs. “Almost.”
She raises her paw and scratches my leg.
“You’d better grab a six-pack for this ride.”
