The Lockheed P38 Lightning was the first multi-role aircraft serving as a fighter, bomber, escort and reconnaissance plane of the era.
The P-38 could climb at 3,000 fpm and cruise at 400 mph powered by two Allison V-1710 11/15 turbocharged engines.
It also boasted the first use of tricycle landing gear on an operational fighter aircraft.
So fearsome to the German Luftwaffe, it was dubbed the ‘Forked Tail Devil’. The impressive firepower was comprised of one 20mm cannon and four 50 cal. machine guns all nose mounted directly in front of the pilot for concentrated fire accuracy.
