If you were to drive down a rural road near Etowah, North Carolina, you may see a strange sight. Out in the middle of what looks like a field is a huge, beautiful clock with the time stopped at 10:16. At night it is lit up, the only light in acres of darkness. This and an abandoned clubhouse are all that is left of a huge golf-course which was to be the centerpiece of an up-scale neighborhood – before the project went bankrupt! The earth-moving machines have all left, the golfers are gone and the fields where the houses were to be built are overgrown with wildflowers. At night, my sister, who lives nearby, can hear coyotes howling on the old golf course. I love the fact that wildlife now runs underneath this clock which stands bravely in the field as if to say, “I’m still here.” And it’s always 10:16.
