Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (25 April/7 May 1840 – 25 October/6 November 1893) is perhaps the most famous Russian composer.
He was gay in a world that didn't accept it, he suffered depression, his mother and one of his close friends died while he was young. And despite these troubles, he created works that are still among the most popular of all classical repertoire!
