Tiger Woods: 3-Time British Open Champ Still in Good Position to Win Major | Bleacher Report

Tiger Woods may have missed the cut at the Greenbrier Classic, but he’s still set up to win a major championship in 2012.

If success preceded a major championship for Tiger in 2012, he would have won the Masters and the U.S. Open. But he finished 40th at the Masters after winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational and placed 21st at the U.S. Open after capturing the Memorial.

The reality is, there is no telling what Woods will do in 2012, or when he will do it. He’s not the same golfer who goes on tremendous winning streaks, but he does have three PGA Tour victories on the year (tops on Tour).

The short and sweet of it is, he’s much better overall in 2012 than he has been the past few years. That’s what matters.

Woods has been an inconsistent putter in 2012 (ranked 70th in putting per hole, per ESPN), but he has shown the ability to make some impressive putts. His putting is the best it’s been since 2009.

Woods has also shown the ability to make some impressive shots this year. He ranks 10th in greens in regulation (67.95 percent, per PGATour.com), which is the best mark for him since 2008. He ranks 27th in birdie average (one birdie per 3.74 holes). And he ranks first in scoring average. Even his driving accuracy has been up—he ranks 41st on Tour (64.2 percent)—an area he’s been historically poor in even when he was winning all those majors.

Will Tiger Woods place in the top 10 of the 2012 British Open?

There is a lot to be encouraged about if you’re Tiger Woods these days. He finally appears to have at least gotten out of the gutter. He will still have his bad tournaments now and then (like most golfers in the world), but he’s shown with his victories this year that he does have the ability to win another major as soon as 2012.

Pay no attention to Woods’ poor performance at the Greenbrier Classic. It doesn’t mean that he’s headed for disaster at the British Open next week. His game is unpredictable these days, just like the game of golf. It’s better than being predictably disappointing.
