For most of us photography is not about traveling to an exotic location and capturing some scene, it is about recognizing and capturing the extraordinary and beautiful in what we see around us every day.

Isn’t it amazing that photography makes you do things you wouldn’t normally do? On a business trip last week I drove an hour-and-a-half through traffic to get to Half Moon Bay after taking a flight and working all day. The entire time I was thinking that I should just turn around and forget it. When I got there, though, I saw the most amazing sunset. I was able to get some good shots and just stand there and soak up some of the beauty of one of the most amazing creations on the planet. If I hadn’t wanted to take pictures so bad I would have missed it.

I have always wanted to be an artist but my drawing / painting / sculpture / writing / fill-in-the-blank talents have never measured up. I don’t know how many times I have thought: “If I could only make my hands create what my mind sees”. With photography the camera is my vehicle, it is my capture device, it can record what I see that is noteworthy. I think I have finally found my way to show the world what is inside my head.

Admitting someone else has talent does not diminish my own. Those are easy words to write.

A lot of photographers say that it doesn’t matter what kind of camera you have, you can still take great pictures. That may be true but your camera sure can ruin a lot of good shots, too.

White balance settings are my nemesis. I will remember to check them before I start snapping away, I will, I will…
