Artist's Description

(AS IS, Finepix F31fd, f/2.9, ISO100, WB: ‘Cloudy’, shutter priority, 1/9 secs)
Near where I work there is this (very) old house, lost among the new concrete-and-steel buildings. I hope one day it will be restored to it’s former glory, but at the moment it’s used as exhibition and antiques shop – it’s like Aladdin’s cave, really. One room is dedicated to living room furniture, one to display collections (such as butterflies) and one to mirrors of all shapes and sizes, and so on. Somewhere among the collections of small things I found this conch shell, really pretty, which was once the home of a living creature, the same way the house itself was once a home. Both had reached some time ago the end of their life as originally intended, and both had now a use which the original owners could not imagine. As I said, Aladdin’s cave… I’d like to think that one day a child will listen once more thought this conch shell to hear the sound of waves, the same way I did once with my aunt’s…

(The place is Brunswick House near Vauxhall Station in London – see the English Heritage entry, the company is Lassco, and most of the objects are reclaimed from (really) old houses being renovated)

I was tempted to crop the right side and eliminate the light in the right-hand top corner, but I would lose the edges of the glass display case – I’m looking for feedback: which way do you think it would be better? Many thanks in advance for your advice
