Artist's Description

(AS IS (minus 90 degrees clockwise rotation), Finepix F31fd)
This is the door to the Santa Maria Gloriosa Dei Frari, in Sestier de S. Polo in Venice, two days before Christmas 2008. Very cold, very foggy (see my other photos from the same trip), and not many people on the streets unless they had to go somewhere. Yet here is this man, begging at the door of one of the hundreds, and one of the greatest of churches in Venice… For a list of the treasures inside, see the link above to the Wikipedia page.
To quote Wikipedia, ‘The Franciscans were granted land to build a church in 1250, but the building was not completed until 1338. Work almost immediately began on its much larger replacement, the current church, which took over a century to build. The campanile, the second tallest in the city after that of San Marco, was completed in 1396.’ The whole of Venice is a designated historical site (see the UNESCO list entry)
