Artist's Description

This pattern was in the bark of a tree, and I immediately thought of the Mimi Spirits.

Mimi figures are spirit figures in Central Australia they are represented in many bark paintings and carvings. Their images are also found upon the rock walls of Kakadu and the Arnhem Land escarpment.
Mimi’s are tall and thin. They blow on the crevices of rocks, which open and allow them to slip inside. They live inside the rocks where they carry on their daily life and ceremonies, speaking the same language and bound together by the same system of kinship as the local Aboriginal community. Mimi spirits are often consulted by the elders, who can see them and know the Mimi’s songs and dances.
