Artist's Description

Getting a little closer and using the full reach of the telephoto but still going for the ‘aww’ factor:)
This chubby individual is a common seal also know as a harbour seal, the smaller of the two types of seal found around Britain’s coast. They are normally between 3’ and 6’ with the males being somewhat larger than the females and they can live for up to 35 years (females living longer than males).
The west coast of Scotland is the best place to see them (this one is on Arran) and they do enjoy ‘basking’ (using the term loosely as they will haul out on a rock in the rain and cold!) and often adopt the banana pose i.e. their heads and tails sticking upwards!
Taking this required a long creep up along the very seaweedy beach, in the rain, carrying camera and heavy lens. Inevitably, I took a tumble – much to Shonah’s amusement and got a good soaking in the soggy, wet seaweed!

Thanks for looking.
Richard
