Artist's Description

I’m not 100% sure that I am right here but I think this is a drying kiln, probably for corn. There are many remains of drying kilns in Shetland and the Croft-house museum even has a re-constructed kiln but this one on Lunna Ness is nearly complete aside from this large ‘gash’ on one side (and no roof of course!). Perhaps someone (Nat?) can correct me if I am wrong?
The idea behind them is to place corn or sometimes seaweed onto a platform inside the kiln whilst warm air is drawn from a fire alongside the kiln and passed through the platform to exit at the top.
Whatever it actually is, I liked the simple shape and how, in the evening sun, it had a warm glow against the cool, blue sky.
Thanks for having a look.
Richard
