Artist's Description

‘Fama Gusta’ (JX 202) Cdr. Arun Khetarpal, 2/Lt, Poona Horse, Battle of Basantar Dec. 16, 1971 – Fama Gusta (JX 202), was the personal tank of tank commander Arun Khetarpal, which died during this historic fight, in the arms of Nathu Singh, his gunner. This particular tank was the most decorated among the whole Poona Horse company, equipped with Centurion Mark VII tanks. This one in particular decimated seven Pakistani Pattons. “Arun stood like an insurmountable rock between victory and failure of the counter-attack by 13 Lancers.” according to Hony Capt Nathu Singh of the Black Arrows brigade which was there with the Poona and Hodson’s Horse company. This brigade, which decimated 55 Pattons for the loss of 8 tanks brigade became the most highly decorated formation of the Indian Army, having won 79 gallantry awards including one PVC, five MVCs and 12 VrCs. Arun’s Centurion was hit after a seventh victory, for having refused to retreat. The driver, Nand Singh, died also.
